KARST SPRINGSHED INVESTIGATIONS AND MONITORING

Silver Springs Spring Vent Documentation and Discharge Measurements
Silver Springs, Marion County, FL, 2006; St. Johns River Water Management District.

Pete Butt signals to surface that samplilng line is in place at Catfish Hotel spring in the Silver Springs run.  Click for larger view.

Assist in the first comprehensive collection of data from the various springs that constitute the Silver Springs Group: support water sampling by SJRWMD personnel at all vent groups; make physical and ecological descriptions; map and photograph all the springs in the first 1,200 meters of the Silver River; make U/W discharge measurements at all suitable spring vent cross-sections and small vents.

High Springs Gap Water Level Monitoring Network
Plan, install and operate eight water level recorders, near High Springs FL, 2003-present; For CCDA Waters LLC funded by Florida Springs Initiative Grant.

Eight water level recorders were sited and put in operation within the High Springs Gap Springs Recharge Area.  Work included site selection, landowner agreements, oversight of survey and installation of 3 wells, purchase of equipment and installation, develop website for public access to data.

Submerged Springs Site Documentation
Wekiva River, Silver River, Ocklawaha River/Rodman Reservoir, Blue Spring Run (Volusia County), Lake Harris, Shands Bridge Spring and Crescent Beach Spring, FL, 2007; St. Johns River Water Management District.

Conduct field verifications of aerial thermography surveys for identification and documentation of possible spring vents.  Create underwater video records of all pertinent sites, measure discharge of three submerged Ocklawaha River/Rodman Reservoir springs.

Swallet/Resurgence Relationships on the Lower Santa Fe River, Florida
Lower Santa Fe River area, North Central Florida, in progress; for Water Resource Associates.

Prepare a report for WRA in support of their work for SRWMD in establishing Minimum Flows and Levels for the Santa Fe River and springs.  The report catalogs all known swallets and rises on that section of the river and details of their relationships and significance.

Develop Spring Protection Zone Databases
Three selected first magnitude springs, FL, 2002; for the Florida DEP.

A study was made to assist the FDEP identification and delineation of existing and potentially vulnerable areas within the recharge areas of Rainbow Spring-Marion County, Blue Spring-Lafayette County and Blue Spring-Jackson County.  These reports were to guide the establishment of spring source protection areas for first magnitude spring sites.  ArcView Spring Protection Zone Databases and Spring Protection Zone Boundaries were produced for the reports.

Stratigraphic Survey of Wekiva Falls (Mastodon) Spring and Island Spring
Lake County, FL., 1993; for Wekiva Falls Resort.

A detailed study was made to compare the stratigraphy and lithology of two springs.  Report to client included cross-sectional diagrams, lithologic identification, photos and video.

Hydrogeological Study of the Main Homosassa Spring
Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, FL, 1991-1992; for the Florida DNR.

This study involved monitoring water quality and flow levels of the spring at high and low tides during a selected period. Full parameter water and sediment sampling was performed, sediment quantity was estimated, and the cave system of the spring was explored, mapped and photographed.
